Accessibility
Emerging Frontiers in Translational Biomedicine and Health Sciences (EFTBHS) is committed to ensuring that all users — authors, reviewers, editors, and readers — have equal access to our content and publishing platform. We continuously work to improve usability and accessibility in accordance with recognized web standards.
1. Our Commitment
EFTBHS strives to make its website and all published materials accessible to individuals of all abilities. We aim to meet or exceed the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Our goal is to provide an inclusive and equitable user experience for everyone, including users of assistive technologies such as screen readers, text-to-speech systems, and keyboard navigation tools.
2. Platform Accessibility (Open Journal Systems)
The EFTBHS website operates on the Open Journal Systems (OJS 3.5.0-1) publishing platform, which is designed and maintained by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) with accessibility in mind. OJS follows accessibility best practices including:
- Semantic, standards-compliant HTML markup for screen reader compatibility.
- Keyboard-accessible navigation menus and form elements.
- Contrast-compliant color palettes and scalable typography for readability.
- ARIA roles and landmarks to support assistive technologies.
- Responsive layout that adapts to mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.
EFTBHS regularly reviews accessibility updates provided by PKP and applies improvements or patches as they are released.
3. Accessible Content and Publications
We encourage all authors and editors to ensure that submitted manuscripts and supplementary files are accessible to all readers. Steps we take to promote accessible publishing include:
- Providing PDF/HTML/EPUB galleys with readable, structured tagging where possible.
- Encouraging use of alternative text (alt text) for figures, images, and tables.
- Ensuring proper heading hierarchies (H1–H4) for logical document structure.
- Using high-contrast typography and color combinations consistent with journal brand colors (#0086a8 and #01625f).
- Requiring captions or transcripts for multimedia materials when available.
Authors are encouraged to follow the W3C Accessibility Guidelines for Authoring when preparing manuscripts to ensure content usability across devices and assistive technologies.
4. Browser and Device Compatibility
The EFTBHS website is tested to function properly on current versions of major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge) and on both desktop and mobile devices. For the best experience, users are encouraged to keep their browsers updated to the latest version.
5. Continuous Improvement
Accessibility is an ongoing process. We regularly review the site structure, navigation, and published materials to identify and remove barriers to accessibility. Feedback from users and the academic community helps us prioritize improvements.
6. Reporting Accessibility Issues
If you encounter any accessibility barriers on the EFTBHS website or within published articles, please contact the editorial team. We aim to respond to accessibility inquiries within 5 business days.
